Today the Arkansas Climate Awareness Project (ARCAP) officially launched its global warming essay contest for the 2006-2007 school year and announced it will begin accepting essays immediately. The global warming themed essay contest is open to all students currently enrolled in an Arkansas high school. The winner will receive a $4,000 college scholarship and an invitation to read the essay at a statewide gathering of community leaders in summer 2007.
The deadline for submitting an essay is March 1, 2007 and the winner will be announced at the 2007 Arkansas Earth Day Festival on Saturday, April 21 at the Riverfront Amphitheatre in downtown Little Rock.  Essays should be between 600 and 2,500 words, double spaced using 12-point font, and submitted with a cover sheet via email to contest@arclimate.org.
ARCAP has created an essay committee consisting of nine education and community leaders from different regions of the state to help promote and administer the contest. The committee will select one judge from its committee and one each from the Arkansas Science Teachers Association and the Arkansas Environmental Education Association to make up the three judge panel that will choose the contest winner.
"The essay contest is a unique way to inform Arkansans about the threats global warming poses to the Natural State," said Don Richardson, ARCAP director. "Our hope is that the contest encourages future leaders of Arkansas to also lead the way in combating global warming throughout the world."
"I'm excited to work with ARCAP on the global warming essay contest," said Dr. Corbet Lamkin, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Southern Arkansas University and member of the essay committee. "This is a great way for students and teachers to learn about global warming impacts on Arkansas and prepare the next generation of Arkansans to help find solutions."
